THE 5 BEST PLACES TO EAT ON A SMALL BUDGET

If you haven't noticed, this island is quite isolated, about 165 miles away from any major commercial activity. As a result, basic food necessities like nuts, fruits, meats, gasoline, ice cream, milk, beer, liquor, flour, sugar, paper plates and napkins all have to make a one-way trip 4 hour down to Key West and then go back empty 4 hours to Miami. This drives up prices, forcing all vendor establishments to pass on the costs to both tourists and locals. This is why Conch Shack is not embarrassed to charge you $8 for a simple hot dog. Therefore, it's our duty to inform you about cheap places to eat in the area. Compiling this list was no easy task, but if you follow the proverbial breadcrumbs trail of the locals (who often work multiple jobs just to survive here), you'll discover the hidden gems. These are the places where they choose to eat, and they hold the key to finding affordable options amidst a very costly foodscape.

1.     Popeyes Sandwich (2120 N Roosevelt Blvd.)

The Popeye's Chicken Sandwich is a delectable combination of crispy, seasoned fried chicken on a soft and buttery brioche bun. It is topped with spicy mayo and tangy pickles that bring out the authentic flavors of Louisiana. In my opinion, if you order the A La Chicken Sandwich without the drink and fries, it is the best deal you can find in the entire United States. It's like enjoying a delicious meal for free.

2.     Duetto Pizza (540 Greene St.)

Duetto Pizza is a pizzeria that specializes in serving New York-style slices. Despite being a small establishment, it offers one of the most unbeatable deals on the island every single day. Between 11am to 4pm, you can enjoy “Any Kind” of two large slices of pizza for just $6.98.

3.      Sandy Café (1026 White St.)

Sandy Café is a popular spot where you can walk up to the window counter and place your order. If you prefer, they also provide delivery services for a minimal fee of $3. This place is always bustling with customers, and for good reason. Not only do they serve generous portions of delicious food, but it is also incredibly affordable. My personal favorites are the Cuban Mix Sandwich, which is packed with ham, pork, salami, Swiss cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, mayonnaise, and mustard. It's like having a fantastic 6-inch sub for the price of $9.75. Another great option is their on the Best Bucket List Burger List is their Cheeseburger with fries, available for just $12.95.

4.      The Conch Cuban Café 1330 Simonton St.)

Similar to Sandy's, The Conch Cuban Café operates in a very similar manner. However, their main focus is on serving delightful breakfast options. Their breakfast sandwiches are always made with fresh ingredients and are incredibly tasty to start your day on the island. Most breakfast sandwiches cost $7.50 or less.

5.      El Siboney (900 Catherine St.)

This is the only restaurant on the list where you can sit down and enjoy your meal. And if you're a fan of authentic Cuban cuisine, this is the place to be. As you peruse the menu, you might find yourself wondering if you've entered an alternate universe. A hamburger for just $5.05. A steak sandwich priced at $9.19. A beef empanada for only $3.65. And if you're in the mood for a roasted chicken, it comes with mashed potatoes and a salad for just $14.95. Oh, and don't forget to try their Cuban coffee, which costs a mere $2.60. Trust me, you should take advantage of this incredible place before they inevitably go out of business due to their unbelievably low prices. But in all seriousness, the food here is fantastic, the establishment is well-maintained, and the wait staff is exceptional (I might even have proposed to one of them).
